I’ve had a lot of fun this week reading blog posts and news about parenting. Thought I’d share!
- Bree writes a thoughtful and difficult post that starts with what happens in a lesbian family when your daughter says, “Now you’ve each got your real kid sitting with you,” meaning each mom has their bio-child on their lap. Painful words for moms to hear from their own daughter, and Bree has some good thoughts about how to handle it and how complicated things can get in a queer family.
- Laurenne Sala writes about her dad 14 years after he committed suicide. It’s a touching pair of pieces about kids and fathers, about reactions to a gay parent, about coming to terms with difficult things. In two parts: Part I and Part II. It’s on a new-ish site for freaky families (I mean that in a good way but they call themselves The Next Family, and I hope they do lots of deep pieces like this one.)
- Strawberry writes about keeping your relationship intact during the first year of parenthood. Great advice that everyone needs to read: couples with kids, couples expecting kids, and couples who are trying.
- This week, was there anyone not writing about breastfeeding? I won’t try to sum up the whole tempest in a teapot here, but just point out that I found Arwyn’s post at Raising My Boychick really elevated the discussion. We’ve also got Bus Chick’s post about breastfeeding (or not) on the bus, Lyn’s post about weaning angst, and a nicely logical post from Backpacking Dad.
- Lenore of Free Range Kids gives lots of good reasons why we should not try to find out what sex offenders live near our homes.
- Speaking of things that freak me out, this sex educator manages to take a disturbing story of six-year-olds having sex and use it to teach us something about dealing with sex with our children.
